History and Stories of The Tennessee Valley
Welcome to Old Huntsville Magazine’s online home! Since 1989 we have been writing the stories of North Alabama’s rich and colorful history. Each month we proudly publish Old Huntsville’s Magazine to bring you the stories of heart-warming families, cold-blooded murders, military Veterans, the Monte Sano Hotel, Civil War activity in this area, moonshine stills, and old-fashioned nostalgia that will fascinate you.
Not only can you read the events familiar to our ancestors, but you can share in our research, which makes it all possible. We welcome you to send in memories of your family that could be published for thousands to read. It is so important to get the memories of our parents/ grandparents & relatives in writing so that they live on in these rich stories. Once they’re gone, their memories are gone too unless we write them down for future generations.
- Thirty-five years ago, Tom and Cathey Carney married and in that same year decided to put together a little newsletter for their neighbors in Historic Old Town in Huntsville, AL. It started with a ghost story, a few recipes, a few made-up ads, and some early 1900 newspaper shorts that happened in Huntsville, Al. The little magazine increased in readership and within a few years there were “Old” franchises in fourteen locations throughout the U.S. that Tom managed. One of them was in Decatur, AL “The Old Tennessee Valley”, which stayed in business till just a few years ago.
- Every town has its rich history and entertaining legends. Tom always said, “People aren’t all that interested in dry history, or the mansion on the hill, or famous people that lived here years ago – they want the story of the Bootlegger’s daughter or the child who worked in Dallas Mills or the love story of two neighbors on Randolph Street.”
- Find out for yourself – click on a couple of the past issues and you’ll be hooked. Read something great for a change. We’re all ready for some positive stories.
